Project Reservoir 15-16 has had an exciting summer and fall with STEM based teams focusing on Bees (http://anthosavers4.weebly.com/), Aquaponics (http://aquaponics28.weebly.com/) a team with a pasion to control nutrient overloads causing algal blooms in bodies of water through aquaponic growing techniques, S.T.O.R.M (http://teamstorm28.weebly.com/) team has redisigned our flood table is in the prototype stage for developing a motor oil filter for city street drains, Plastic Elastics (http://plasticelastic.weebly.com/) a group of STEM girl scientists trying to raise awareness about plastic polution and designing a microplastic filters and studying wax worm plastic digestion, and finally our physical fitness and science team STEAM Spartans (http://prsteamspartans.weebly.com/) who have designed physical activities for kids linked with STEM based learning this team is also focused on creating a field based exercise water filter for sporting events that use massive amounts of plastic bottles.
This year we also have started up a 7th grade STEM team that is studying water quality techniques that can be adapted to our municipal water supplies using solar power (http://aquaenergizers.wix.com/praqua).
This has kept our lab humming with activity all year and field projects keeping us busy every Saturday this year. We have taught and guided 6 other Jersey City schools on trips to Reservoir 3 in Jersey City. We started by creating and maintaining thanks to STEAM Spartans ⅓ of mile of trails at the reservoir, that now can be used by kids, fishermen, naturalists, and dog walkers in the Heights of Jersey City. The public can go through a trail system that includes a phragmite maze created by Phrag Attack our STEM team from last year that one the international competition by Random Acts (http://phragmiteattack.weebly.com/we-won-an-international-competition.html) Our teams build on ideas from last years teams and eco-designs of nature and devices.
Another project @aquaponics28 teamed up with @mycofiltrator (Harshal Argawal-a local budding fungi scientist from McNair Academic) to transform a island in the reservoir made from local landfill into a bio-filter island using a solar powered pump we designed and built, a mycofiltration, two ponds, daphnia cyanobacteria pre-filters, a trail system, and a rock bridge soon to be converted into a passive mycofiltration filter (the world’s first). In this endeavor and for their other research the STEM team Aquaponics become 1 of 8 national middle school finalists in the Lexus Eco-Challenge run by Scholastic (http://www.scholastic.com/browse/article.jsp?id=3750833).
Anthosavers started the year by researching bees, reaching out to bee experts on social media, and coming up with a BeeSafe (our trademark, idea and design) for creating an insulated home for bees in under utilized public spaces that has solar powered heating and cooling, a water catchment system for bee drinking water, Bee listening radio transmission, and a varroa mite brush entrance system. For this work they also were judged to be 1 of 8 national finalists for the Lexus Eco-Challenge and our teams swept all spots for middle school in the NE region. Check out their potential BeeSafe Bee corridor google map! (https://www.google.com/maps/d/edit?mid=zve0z1HcsV9o.k28GW7cDa-t8&usp=sharing)
S.T.O.R.M is doing testing on our patentable design for an oil filter system for city street drains that does not impede flow through the drains, but captures all street run-off of motor oils using a hydrophobic material that absorbs oils. They also are mapping community drains to determine issue areas, to raise awareness, and determine potential impact of changing how water drains on our streets and parking lots.
Plastic Elastics has created a public outreach campaign to raise awareness about the dangers of plastic waste, up-cycle plastic waste for art projects, started a community map raising awareness about drinking tap water, start a trial on wax worm consumption of plastics, and started developing a potentially patentable device to capture microplastics from our daily clothes washing.
Or youngest team Aqua Energizers is looking at water quality and devising a device that will potentially have impact on water supplies by preventing evaporation, aerating water to keep it healthy for consumption, and be very portable. Because we enter competitions we are keeping this device underwraps until we enter Exploravision, Ecybermission, and of course Google Science fair.
All of our teams enter these competitions and wished we could still enter now defunct competitions like Siemens (We Can Change the World), Disney Planet Challenge, Volvo Adventure, Christopher Columbus Awards, and Intel’s Science Talent Search. We believe we could compete as inner city public school with any school in the country, but alas we will focus our energies on competitions that are still available to our STEM teams!

OUR INSPIRATIONAL AND SUPPORTIVE LEADER - DR. JANET ELDER
Simply put, without the support, trust, and commitment of Dr. Elder for the past four years, Project Reservoir would not exist. During the Intel Schools of Distinction National Ceremony for our Middle School Science program in Washington, D.C., Dr. Elder suggested to Mr. Brown, Mr. O'Donnell, and Mrs. Mulewski that we should check out our local Reservoir as a potential learning opportunity for our students. When we returned to P.S.#28 Dr. Elder established our connection with the Reservoir Preservation Alliance and our newly formed Project Reservoir team of educators met with both Vinny and Steve to discuss the possibility of a new relationship. From there, the rest is history!
On behalf of Mr. Naatus, Mr. O'Donnell, Mrs. Yabut, and the Project Reservoir team of over 50 students, we sincerely thank you for your leadership, guidance, and belief in our collective vision to make a difference in our community and beyond.

Vice Principals in support of project reservoir!
The P.S.#28 family welcomed both Ms. Matos and Mr. Holness as our vice principals in September. It didn't take long for them to become key figures within our community. Pictured above are Ms. Matos and Mr. Holness assisting Mrs. Yabut and members of Plastic Elastics present to our staff about their project. We thank you both for your energy and support of Project Reservoir and P.S.#28!
What is Project reservoir?
Project Reservoir is a multi-year, multi-disciplinary project designed, implemented, and maintained by the students of the Christa McAuliffe School, PS #28 in Jersey City, NJ. The project is focused on the students' efforts to help revitalize and transform an abandoned local reservoir into a first class, state recognized recreation and education center. Throughout the project, the Project Reservoir Team has partnered with the Reservoir Preservation Alliance to identify problems, design innovative solutions, and solicit community support for their vision. Along the way, the students have enjoyed a unique educational experience and the opportunity to apply their academic skills to real world situations. The students have grown in confidence, leadership, and academic knowledge. They have created this site to archive and share their project with the world. We invite you to take some time to explore "Project Reservoir!"
UPDATE, 2/9/14:
Project Reservoir has evolved into a STEM based program that provides over 45 students in grades 5-8 with opportunities to identify, explore, and experiment with environmental or community based issues that need improvement. Last year's two 8th grade competition teams generated over $50,000 in college funds! This season we have 14 eighth grade students that collectively represent our four competition teams, which are the following: Earth Filters, Tunnel Savers, Solar Aerators, and the Plastic Elastics!
The foundation of our STEM program will always be in promoting and preserving Reservoir#3 in the Heights section of Jersey City. We hope you enjoy exploring our site and look forward to your partnership in assisting us in securing Reservoir#3 as an outdoor classroom for the students of JC and beyond! Thank you!

M.S.#7 sTUDENTS UNDERSTAND THE POWER AND INFLUENCE OF NATURE IN THEIR URBAN ENVIRONMENT = RESERVOIR #3!
MESSAGE RECEIVED FROM MR. JOHN FLORA, PERFORMING ARTS SPECIALIST, M.S. #7:
"An 8th grader from MS#7 wrote this song two weeks ago. She said she was inspired to write the song because she looks for nature in the city. It was performed this afternoon in front of the founder of Little Kids Rock, David Wish. A group conversation then ensued after the performance. Students were asked about evidence of nature around them in their city. Many immediately referenced the reservoir and what it means to them (nature, games of manhunt, etc.). And so, we decided to dedicate the song to the reservoir and all of the work that you and your students do to preserve it. Here's "City of Nature" by Meraris, Andrew and Sarita."
Meraris, Andrew, and Sarita, THANK YOU from the Project Reservoir crew here @ #28! Our mission has always been to connect more people/students to the Reservoir. We will be in contact with your amazing teacher, Mr. Flora to discuss a meeting at the Reservoir soon!
Send us an audio file soon!
